Readings for 11-19-08

We are talking with Violet Gonda from SW Radio Africa on Wednesday. Please listen to two broadcasts from their site and give your reactions in the comment section of this entry.

In addition, we will be joined by Denis Burgierman, a magazine editor from Brazil who is currently traveling the country collecting research for a new magazine. His travel stories are collected here, but they are in Portuguese.

In addition, our talks with Denis and Violet will allow us to also engage in a conversation about press around the world and how it’s different than in the US. Please read the following to help inform our discussion:

The United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights Article 19 states: Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.

But it’s not happening everywhere:
Reporters Without Borders: Press Freedoms 2008 index
Tally of journalists killed worldwide in 2008
Two Journalists in Pakistan Wounded by Gunmen

Online, it’s no better.
Internet censorship in China
Chinese blogger beaten to death
Burmese blogger sentenced to 30 years in jail

grade questions

A number of you came up to me after class and asked what your current grade in the class was. I am happy to share that with you if you drop me an e-mail.

However, one thing to consider: you just turned in a paper today, there is still one more to come, plus the final. Your performance on those three things will significantly affect the final grade.

That said, I’m happy to give you a ballpark idea of where you stand, if you e-mail me.

work for next week

It’s on the syllabus, but since I don’t have my normal slideshow today, here it is here too:

–Visit Quimby’s (1854 W. North Ave. Chicago) and purchase a magazine that interests you, but that you’ve never heard of before. OR Find a locally-oriented ethnic publication.
Post on the class blog about the publication you found and bring it into class next week.

IMPORTANT: changes to the Freedom Museum assignment

It’s true folks, the Freedom Museum does not allow photography. This is too bad. They should update their website’s FAQ, apparently. They cite copyright issues. Argh.

As a result, the photo essay assignment is canceled.

In its place is now an essay-essay.

Please visit the Freedom Museum and select a specific exhibit. Describe the exhibit and talk about the repercussions the freedoms explained in it have on you, on the community you are a part of, and the profession of journalism. Talk with at least three people about how these freedoms have affected them (positively or negatively). Be clear and precise in your wording and explanations. 500 words.

Photojournalism
Photojournalism is a crucial element journalistic storytelling. It can act to anchor a story in a place and a time, or it can put a face to a name. It can work in conjunction with text, or stand alone as a photo essay.
